Plate Industries Announces Development of Axicon™ — A High-Strength, Fast-Install Structural Connection Platform

    DOWNLOAD PDF VERSION

CAPE CORAL, FL, April 26, 2025 — Plate Industries today announced the development of Axicon™, an advanced axial compression locking system engineered to dramatically reduce installation time, simplify structural connections, and enhance field reliability — particularly in uplift-critical applications such as helical pile systems, commercial roof stanchions, and grade-mounted structures.

Developed through a joint venture initiative and advanced within the Plate Industries Idea Factory, Axicon™ addresses long-standing inefficiencies in structural connection methods — replacing welding, multi-bolt assemblies, and complex roof penetrations with a single-action mechanical lock that installs in mere seconds.

Originally developed to improve the interface between helical piles and structural components, Axicon™ quickly demonstrated broader value in applications requiring fast installation, high strength, and adaptive engagement with varying profile and field conditions.

Axicon™ achieves a full-strength mechanical lock in seconds — with no welding, no grinding, and no damage to protective coatings. Initial controlled testing demonstrated axial load capacities repeatedly exceeding 20,000 lbs, validating Axicon™'s suitability for a wide range of structural applications. Installation times were reduced by over 95% compared to conventional welded and other preparation-intensive mechanical connection methods.

Axicon™ is currently patent pending, with ongoing development efforts expanding its performance range and application versatility.

    Field-Ready Advantages:

    • Axial Compression Locking — Single-action mechanical engagement replaces welding and bolting
    • Fast Installation — Achieve structural lock in seconds using standard tools
    • Membrane-Compatible — No metal shavings, reduced penetrations, and minimal disturbance to TPO, EPDM, PVC, or spray-applied roof membranes
    • Preserves Galvanized & Coated Components — No heat or abrasion required
    • Self-Correcting Engagement — Adapts to out-of-round tubes, inconsistent wall thickness, out-of-square cuts, and surface defects
    • High Load Performance — Load-tested beyond 20,000 lbs in axial tension, with configurations under development that significantly surpass these values
    • Field Adjustability — Allows final positioning and adjustment during assembly
    • Standard Extrusion Compatibility — Supports use of common structural profiles with field-cut lengths and no precision fabrication required
    • Multi-Material Compatibility — Suitable for a wide range of material configurations, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and composite systems

    Target Applications:

    • Helical pile-to-structure connections
    • Commercial rooftop mechanical supports and solar mounting systems
    • Grade-mounted infrastructure (lighting, signage, strut assemblies)
    • Temporary and modular construction systems
    • Uplift- and wind-load-resistant connections in hurricane and seismic zones

    Platform Expansion:

Future development efforts are focused on expanding the Axicon™ platform into specialized connection systems for specific structural applications, including rooftop assemblies, modular framing, and foundation systems — enabling standardized solutions across a range of industries.

Axicon™ is currently in advanced development, with licensing, co-development, and early-stage integration opportunities under evaluation.
